Pre-qualification of businesses regarding workplace health and safety

Description The project aims to pre-qualify Burkinabè businesses with the mining industry with regards to health, safety and environment.
Partner ABSM (Burkinabè alliance of mining goods and services suppliers)
Objectives Through collaboration with UNITERRA (CECI-EUMC), reinforcing our burkinabè partner’s abilities with regards to health, safety and environment, allowing member companies to qualify as suppliers with mining companies.
Selected strategy Emphasis is placed on the following elements:

  • Training and awareness
  • Demonstration project and business model creation
  • Establishing the 5S system within the target businesses

The project aims to:

  • Assist with the establishment of a knowledge transfer center for health, safety and environment in West Africa

This strategy combines training with coaching and assistance activities.

Activities completed or in progress
  • Three (3) missions carried out in Burkina Faso under the guidance of UNITERRA (CECI-EUMC)
  • Identifying support needs and field partners in Burkina Faso
  • Developing a project aimed at the implementation of a 5S project
  • A health and safety as well as 5S training activity
  • A business plan for the health, safety and environment knowledge transfer center

Workplace health and safety management and prevention training program

Description Development and deployment of training modules aimed at developing the skills of managers and employees in charge of workplace health and safety
Partner Collectif des Entreprises d’insertion du Québec (Québec integration businesses collective)
Objectives In collaboration with the Collectif’s workplace health and safety committee (CSS), increasing and consolidating the skills of member organizations in the integrated management of areas related to workplace health and safety.
Selected strategy Emphasis is placed on the following basics:

  • Managing of workplace health and safety for leaders
  • Identifying and controlling workplace health and safety risks
  • Simplified prevention program

The strategy aims to support businesses:

  • In setting up basics for the management and prevention of workplace health and safety
  • Or in the pursuit of implementing good management practices with regards to workplace health and safety

This strategy combines training, coaching and assistance activities in the workplace.

Activities completed or in progress
  • Identification, validation and prioritization of training needs
  • Development and delivery of a first training module (pilot project)
  • Adjustment of the strategy following the pilot, and deployment proposal for all the selected themes
  • Development of upcoming training modules and subscriptions of participants (in progress)
Impacts (direct or indirect) So far, this project has made it possible to:

  • Conduct a survey with general managers to identify their support needs
  • Train 2 cohorts (one in Québec City and one in Montréal) on the subject of “Managing workplace health and safety for leaders” for a total of 20 participants from 10 businesses
  • Offer personal coaching to 4 managers
